After five years of trying, we are delighted to announce that we have managed to book the amazing Show of Hands (plus Myranda Sykes) for our Opening Concert at the Princess Hall, Burnham-on-Sea on Friday 3rd September 2010. Show of Hands, came top in two categories at this year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk and Roots Awards with Best Original Song – Arrogance Ignorance and Greed and Best Duo. Ticket price is just £16 and we are limited to just 300 tickets, (standing only) and this will sell out very quickly. Send cheque made out to B-o-S Folkfest with a stamped/addressed envelope to GC Music, 9-11, College St. Burnham-on-Sea. Somerset TA8 1AR, or pop into the shop and pick them up by paying cash (no credit/debit card payments)

Other new features of this year’s Folkfest is a Thursday Night Taster hosted by the Ritz Acoustic Club, which will be a mixture of Open Mic and a great guest band, and a Sunday Night Wind-Down event at the Rugby Club (BASC Ground) after the Open Air event in Manor Gardens.

More camping is also available this year at the BASC ground, and they will be offering breakfasts in the clubhouse for the bleary-eyed. Check out booking details on the INFO page

Coastal Cloggers first outing

Congratulations to committee member Linda Bond, who led The newly formed Coastal Cloggers to their first public performance at the recent Ritz Acoustic Club Open Mic Night on Thursday 3rd June 2010. We are really proud to support Linda, her clogging side and the fabulous musicians, who are demonstrating one of the spin-offs of organising a Folkfest. A few years ago, I am sure that most of the inhabitants of this area had never seen an Appalachian Clogging side perform. However, our insistence in including a full dance programme to the fest every year, has created the desire to get a new local side together, and with the continued hard work of Linda, the Musicians and all of the loyal participants, they now have a side to be proud of. Look out for them at the Folkfest and give them your support. If you would like to get involved, they meet and practice on Monday evenings at the Baptist Church Hall, College St. Burnham-on-Sea at 7.00pm, so get along and have a go. Much more fun than going to the gym!

Fundraising update

The Folkfest committee are pleased to announce that we have now received two grants; one from the Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council totalling £1,100 and a further grant from the Somerset Community Foundation totalling £750 towards the running of the Folkfest. We would like to publically thank both organisations for their generosity and help in enabling the Folkfest to grow and continue into its fifth year. As the festival grows, so do the infrastructure costs, as we strive to ensure that we provide a safe and secure environment for everybody, and despite considerable fundraising by the committee, we could not exist without some external financial help.
Following on from the successful Strawberry Line Sponsored Bike Ride, which raised in excess of £250, the Crooks Peak Sponsored Walk will be happening on June 20th. Sponsorship forms are available from GC Music or from Ted Heath on Ritz Acoustic Club evenings. The five mile uphill walk to the top of Crooks Peak is designed to be achievable by most levels of fitness. This will be followed by Music at the Knoll Inn at E. Brent. So get a form, get some sponsorship and enjoy another Fun Sunday out with the Folkfest Committee and others.

Railway Fundraiser raises over £1,000

Thanks to the generosity of landlord Danny Pearce , the many acts who played for nothing or basic expenses, and the 250 people who paid £5 to come and enjoy the event, we managed to raise over £1,000 towards the running of this years Folkfest.

It really was a great day, with a capacity crowd, and fabulous music from David Chave, Bag of Rats, Tim Dean & Paul Stradling (Tri-Sexual Winkers), Vermin, Ginger Hitlas, Tim Fardon & Rowan Ensoll, Nick Elswood, Chris Elswood, Debbie Beckett, Rosie Eade with Davey Malone, Gangreen and McDowell.

FolkFest favourites play Pogues party

On Friday, December 18th, FolkFest favourites Three Sheets T’Wind will perform at an aftershow party following the Pogues gig at Brixton Academy. The party will take place at Brixton Jamm, about three minutes walk from the Academy, and will feature a performance by Shane MacGowan himself. The fun will last from 10pm till 6am. Tickets are available from http://www.brixtonjamm.org at £8 (£10 on the door). FolkFest fans, though, can get them cheaper by contacting Three Sheets T’Wind directly at http://www.myspace.com/sheetstothewind. Just send them a message telling them you love them and have seen them at our fest, and they’ll sort you out with tickets.

Fourth Phenomenal Folkfest Weekend a success

Thank you to the many emailers, phonecallers and passers-by who have congratulated us on the best Folkfest ever. We are feeling a little jaded this morning (Mon. 7th Sept.) yet still buzzing from the adrenalin that fuelled the committee through what is an incredibly demanding schedule of events crammed into one weekend. The weather was extremely kind to us enabling a stunning finale to take place at the Folk in the Park event on Sunday. It was great to see people still dancing down the road as they left the event with the jigs and reels of the Dambuskers still ringing in their heads.
Everyone has their own special memories of the Fest, but the magic of the Burnham-on-Sea Folkfest is that no one person can see every act on the Saturday (with 63 musical acts and four dance sides, taking part in seven venues on one day). I’m sure the discussions will go on for weeks as to who you enjoyed the most and who you wished you had seen, so come back next year and see if you cram in even more fun than you had this year, which is always a challenge. We look forward to supplying that challenge to you yet again on Friday 3rd Sept. to Sunday 5th Sept. 2010 for the FIFTH ANNUAL FREE BURNHAM-ON-SEA’s FOLKFEST. We hope to see you then.
